Type E: Extensional Tectonic, Fault-Controlled Resource

Extensional-tectonic, fault-controlled resources typically result from a thinning of the crust which increases heat flow. The permeability of these reservoirs is almost entirely secondary (controlled by faults and fractures as opposed to rock porosity).

Many examples of this type of resource can be found throughout the Basin & Range province of the US and Western Turkey.

According to Brophy, extensional-tectonic, fault-controlled resources typically have the following properties:

  • Topography –Rugged on upthrow, low on valley floor
  • Climate – Usually dry with low precipitation
  • Depth to resource – Usually deep (2500-3500m)
  • Surface manifestations – Usually restricted to fault traces
  • Permeability – Dominantly fault controlled
