GVEP International with funding support from the United States Agency for International Developments (USAID) Energy Small Grants Program developed a training manual in order to build the knowledge base of senior and middle level managers of Financial Institutions within East Africa on the various opportunities that exists in the energy sector. The manual was developed as part of a larger programme to enhance the linkages between energy entrepreneurs, consumers and financial institutions in East Africa.

The training manual is developed as a modular guide and provides an overview of financing opportunities in the energy sector including potential financing mechanisms that can be adopted or customized to design an energy financing product or portfolio. It also points out the risks that are inherent in an energy loan portfolio and provides suggestions on how these risks can be mitigated.
