Exploration Activity: Thermal Gradient Holes At North Brawley Geothermal Area (Matlick & Jayne, 2008)

Exploration Activity Details
Location North Brawley Geothermal Area
Exploration Technique Thermal Gradient Holes
Activity Date 1970 - 1975

Usefulness useful
DOE-funding Unknown

Exploration Basis
Thermal gradient wells were drilled for initial exploration and assessment of the North Brawley Geothermal Area.

Notes
Union Oil Company (Unocal) drilled a total of 39 temperature gradient wells and Grace Geothermal Corporation drilled 13. Unocal's wells were 76 m deep and Grace Geothermal's were 152 m deep. The thermal gradient wells revealed an anomaly roughly 26 km^2 with a temperature gradient of 7°C/30 m. These temperature gradient wells helped map the geothermal system for the next step in exploration, deep exploratory wells.
