Parent Exploration Technique: Passive Seismic Techniques
Information Provided by Technique
Lithology: Rock unit density influences elastic wave velocities.
Stratigraphic/Structural: Map geothermal reservoir geometry. Structural geology- faults, folds, grabens, horst blocks, sedimentary layering, discontinuities, etc.
Hydrological: Combining compressional and shear wave results can indicate the presence of fluid saturation in the formation.
Thermal: High temperatures and pressure impact the compressional and shear wave velocities.

Teleseismic-Seismic Monitoring:
Teleseismic monitoring is a technique to seismically image an area utilizing earthquakes originating from distances greater than 1,000 km from the measurement site.

Use in Geothermal Exploration

Teleseismic imaging provides a means to constrain the deeper portions of a geothermal reservoir (to the upper mantle) and enables detailed mapping of the heat source and the tectonic environment. The ability of a teleseismic survey to image to the upper mantle is advantageous because traditional Active Seismic Techniques may be limited in their depth of investigation due to high seismic wave attenuation in complex geothermal areas.[1]

The teleseismic method ‘exploits locally scattered waves generated by impinging teleseismic earthquakes (30° to 60° epicentral distance) to image the crust and upper mantle’ of a geothermal field.[1] This technique is also capable of detecting high-velocity intrusions potentially related to magmatic systems.[2]

Field Procedures

See Passive Seismic Techniques

An array of seismometers is installed in the vicinity of a geothermal reservoir. This passive seismic network then records teleseismic events resulting from earthquakes around the earth. The time period for the measurement varies from months to years.[1]
