The Maine Department of Environmental Protection's Residuals, Sludge, and Composting program regulates the land application and post-processing of organic wastes, including sewage sludge, septage, food waste, and wood wastes. The program also regulates facilities that compost, aerobically digest, anaerobically digest, air dry, heat dry, heat treat, lime stabilize, pelletize or otherwise process residuals. Municipalities are not required to adopt local ordinances with respect to land application of septage and sludge, but they may elect to do so.
