Exploration Activity: Refraction Survey At Kilauea East Rift Geothermal Area (Broyles, Et Al., 1979)

Exploration Activity Details
Location Kilauea East Rift Geothermal Area
Exploration Technique Refraction Survey
Activity Date 1976 - 1977

Usefulness not indicated
DOE-funding Unknown

Exploration Basis
This survey was done as part of an exploratory program for geothermal resources in Hawaii

Notes
Two seismic refraction surveys were conducted in the East Rift Zone. The first survey was conducted in 1976 and was unsuccessful at identifying the depth of high velocity material. During the second survey a high velocity body at 2.1-2.3 km deep was discovered. The interpretations from these studies revealed that the high velocity body is most likely a complex of dikes which provide the energy for the hydrothermal processes in the rift zone.
