City of Aspen Climate Action Plan +The Climate Action Plan calls for greenhouse gas reductions of 30 percent by 2020 and 80 percent by 2050 from its 2004 baseline. Performance metrics are quantified by tons of CO2-e reduced. Based on a 2007 update to the baseline emissions inventory, the community achieved emissions reductions of 68,380 tons. The energy and environmental achievements as of the Plan's adoption in 2007 are outlined as updates within the Plan. To date, there has been no progress report on the Climate Action Plan per se, however the City's environmental achievements are described in the biennial Sustainability Report available at: http://www.aspenpitkin.com/Portals/0/docs/City/GreenInitiatives/enviro_sustainability_report_2008.pdf
Community Renewable Energy Deployment: City of Montpelier Project +1) The City of Montpelier's project goals include have 50% of homes implement deep energy retrofits, 50% of the buildings in downtown will have undergone energy retrofits and use the CHP plant being installed by 2015.  The greenhouse gas emission reduction of 50,000 tons from the instillation of the CHP facility. 2) Quantitative performance metrics will be updated and provided  at the following website:http://www.montpelier-vt.org/page/323/.html
Community Renewable Energy Deployment: Forest County Potawatomi Tribe +1) Reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by 20,000 tons. The CHP facility is expected to produce 1.25MW of electricity, and the biogas digester will produce 150kW electricity. The solar PV installation on the Forest County Potowatomi Community Administration Building is expected to generate 18-30kW of electricity. 2) None to date.
Community Renewable Energy Deployment: Haxtun Wind Project +1) The Haxtun Wind CommRE project will provide 30MW of renewable electricity, providing electricity to approximately 9000 homes.  This project contributes to NECO Wind's greater objective is to provide north eastern Colorado with 650 MW of electric. 2) None to date.
Community Renewable Energy Deployment: Sacramento Municipal Utility District Projects +1) The utility aims to achieve renewable energy goal of 37% by 2020. First Known Use of QECBs will Save Yolo County at lease $8.7 Million of the Next 25 Years +The intent of this project was to develop a 1 MW solar PV array. The community's unique use of various financing mechanisms to install the system are projected to save approximately 8.7 million dollars (i.e., $18.1 million in utility savings with a system cost of $9.4 million) over the 25 year life of the project.
From Tragedy to Triumph: Rebuilding Greensburg, Kansas, To Be a 100% Renewable Energy City +Greensburg's energy goals include: powering all local homes and businesses with "100% renewable energy, 100% of the time;" implementing residential and commercial retrofits that result in 40% and 30% energy savings, respectively, relative to buildings built to the 2003 International Energy Conservation Code with 2004 Supplement. Residential energy efficiency performance metrics: 52% of the new homes permitted between May, 2007 and March, 2009 were voluntarily rated for energy efficiency. Of these, 9 townhome rental units are projected to use 41% less energy than a standard home.  The total 33 homes that were renovated and measured will use on average 25% less energy than a standard home.  Construction is also complete on the 12.5MW Greensburg Wind Farm.  An estimated one quarter of the energy produced by this farm will be used to provide electricity to Greensburg. This case study also claims that 120 new jobs were created through the BTI Wind Energy dealer network.

Lessons Learned: NREL Village Power Program +International governments and utilities had a desire to improve rural electrification using renewable energy sources. 
Local Energy Plans in Practice: Case Studies of Austin and Denver +Denver achievements since the implementation of the Denver Climate Action Plan include: *Through the 2008 pilot Neighborhood Energy Blitz program, 465 households (out of the 2,457 homes contacted) received at least one-energy efficient measure, and over 5,000 compact fluorescent lightbulbs were given to Denver residences. *The City has worked with several organizations to implement the Denver Energy Challenge Program, which encourages residents and businesses to sign up for the utilities Windsource program (a green power purchase option). *The City is implementing a program to encourage businesses to participate in the utility's demand side management (DSM) program, which provides rebates for some energy efficiency measures. *The utility implemented a tiered rate structure aimed at reducing electricity and natural gas usage for residences and businesses. *The City is in the process of adopting more stringent building energy codes. *The city offers parking subsidies to non-profit car share organizations and passed a new zoning code that encourages buildings to offer reserved parking spots for car-sharing vehicles. *A citywide bike sharing pilot program has recorded over 96,000 rides, with 1,765 annual memberships and 32,396 day passes. *The City is implementing DSM and solar power purchase agreements (with a combined capacity of 12MW) in city buildings and on city property. The City also uses more than 43% alternative fueled vehicles in its fleet, has leased land to the utility to develop a landfill gas power plant, and is building CNG fueling stations. *The report also discusses other initiatives included in the Denver Climate Action Plan that have either been implemented by non-city entities, or have not been implemented at all. Austin achievements since the implementation of the Austin Climate Protection Program include: *By the end of 2009, Austin Energy had achieved an energy generation portfolio consisting of 10% renewable energy (including contracts to purchase the energy produced by 439 MW of wind turbines, a 100MW biomass plant, and a 30MW solar farm). *The utility implemented DSM programs that reduced required power plant peak capacity by 64.1MW in fiscal year (FY) 2008 and 52.4MW in 2009. *The City has adopted upgrades to the building energy code that will reduce energy consumption in new homes by 31%. *The city council passed an ordinance requiring disclosure of historic energy use and energy improvements upon the sale of all buildings. Single-family home energy audits are also required at the time of sale. The ordinance has resulted in 2,751 home audits, participation of 230 homes in the utility's grant and loan program to make energy improvements, and the submissions of 45 commercial building ratings. *Austin has PV systems totaling over 4MW generation capacity, thanks in part to the Austin Solar Rebate Program. *The City has implemented several energy measures in its own operations. 53% of city facilities purchase power from the utility's green power purchase program (accounting for 19% of the city's total energy use). City PV installations total 157kW, and the city has audited its alternative fuel vehicles.

New York City Transit Diesel Hybrid-Electric Buses Final Results: DOE/ NREL Transit Bus Evaluation Project +The goals of the study were to: 1. Reduce emissions, specifically oxides of nitrogen (NOx <15 g/mi) and particulate matter (PM <0.06 g/mi) 2. Significantly increase fuel economy 3. Show that the hybrid buses can operate in regular revenue service with no route or driver restrictions 4. Show that the hybrid bus performance (e.g., acceleration, gradability, and range) was equal to or better than that of conventional diesel buses and that drivers can switch from one to the other with no significant difference in operation 5. Demonstrate that drivers and passengers perceive hybrid-electric buses positively 6. Significantly increase brake life 7. Improve the design of the hybrid bus; promote the development of the technology through investment 8. Help put the industry in a position to build and sell “production” hybrid buses.  Study results indicate that all goals were achieved.
