A Guide to Community Solar: Utility, Private, and Non-profit Project Development +This guide provides useful information for communities interested in deploying community solar programs. This material could be used to help community organizers, solar advocates, or utility managers navigate different options and potential legal, financial, and project design obstacles associated with community solar. One feature of the report is a set of tables that overviews different aspects (e.g., benefit allocations, financing structure, etc.) of utility, special purpose entity, and non-profit community solar models. The last section of the document is devoted to a step-by-step guide designed to help communities get started in developing community solar projects. This guide includes a sample budget and template project development worksheet.

Animal Farm Powers Village +This article provides a brief, high-level description of a renewable energy project that benefits a small community in a variety of ways: the anaerobic digestion biogas plant not only supplies heat and electricity to Hatherop homes at a low cost, but it also reduces farm waste and associated odors and stimulates the local economy by creating jobs and paying farmers for their waste. The article also notes that the leftover digestate (liquid waste generated by the anaerobic digestion process) will be used by local farmers as fertilizer.
Assessment of the Technical Potential for Micro-Cogeneration in Small Commercial Buildings across the United States +This paper explores and identifies microgeneration devices for residential uses and applies them to small commercial buildings. The building stock data for small commerical is significant within the US and this resource details the potential for micro-cogeneration for the commerical sector. Cogeneration is an efficient way to capture waste heat and redirect it. This aides in both energy efficiency measures as well as environmental benefits.


Chicago Climate Action Plan +Each action is coupled with a quantitative GHG reduction potential (including total reduction potential; reduction per participant; and annual cost savings per participant or household), the targeted sector (government, business, residential), and a high-level overview. Co-benefits (e.g., job creation, water savings, economic savings) are also identified, but not quantitatively detailed.
City of Aspen Climate Action Plan +This Climate Action Plan is a widely cited example of a community that was an early adopter for greenhouse gas reduction strategies and commitments. The reductions goals were set to comply with levels that the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) called for to avert climate catastrophe at the time the Plan was adopted by City Council. The Plan showcases actions that the City's municipal utility and other internal departments can take to affect community wide emissions. The report also outlines actions that can be taken by various sectors.
Climate Action Planning: A Review of Best Practices, Key Elements, and Common Climate Strategies for Signatories to the American College & University Presidents' Climate Commitment +This report is targeted toward members of college or university communities (e.g., administrators, students, faculty, etc.) undertaking the process of developing or updating a climate action plan. Although some of the discussion pertains only to academic institutions (e.g., the integration of academic research strategies into a climate action plan), many of the insights are broadly to other types of communities. One highlight of the report is a discussion both of best practices in developing a climate action plan, and separate discussion of the key elements of a climate action plan.

Community Response to Concentrating Solar Power in the San Luis Valley +This resource is valuable as it walks through the importance of stakeholder analysis. It lays out a methodology for study and offers examples of stakeholders. This case study is a good example of how to go about identifying barriers, locating energy champions, outline needs, and how to begin to answer and address those barrier issues. This outline and research strategy can be applied in any community wanting to address potential barriers, and stakeholder planning.


Definition of a Zero Net Energy Community +This is a reference that can assist any community who is interested in the concept of net zero-energy. It includes a series of milestones that can assist a community in planning energy reduction that can be included in any energy planning process.


EDIN-USVI Clean Energy Quarterly +This resource provides an ongoing snapshot of the various interrelated activities related to the EDIN USVI project as well as an overview of the highlights of the various analyses and projects currently underway in USVI. The publication presents a "ground-level" account of the details involved in implementing an integrated deployment project in an island community.

First Known Use of QECBs will Save Yolo County at lease $8.7 Million of the Next 25 Years +This project represents the first known use of qualified energy conservation bonds (QECBs) and combined use of QECBs and clean renewable energy bonds (CREBs) in the United States. This case study provides a description of these and other financing mechanisms and provides detail on Yolo County's timeline and decision-making process for choosing funding sources for its PV project. The case study also includes seven lessons learned from Yolo's experience that may assist other communities in implementing a similar process. Finally, the report contains links to several other resources for information about CREBs, QECBs, and Tax Exempt Lease Purchase financing.

In addition to providing a concise overview of Greensburg's energy efficiency and renewable energy planning process and progress to date, the report also includes a list of "key lessons learned" from this project, which may be useful and applicable to other communities.
