Abstract
The design of borehole heat exchanger systems can be carried out by means of several tools In Germany, borehole heat exchanger systems of single-family-houses and similar projects normally are designed either by the questionable value of 50 W/m for the specific abstraction capacity or by using tabulated values according to German guideline VDI 4640 A subsoil exploration usually is not performed For projects of larger scale, economically and technically optimized designs are solely achievable if geothermal exploration is carried out Geothermal exploration is mostly done by geothermal response tests The hence gained results are the basis for the dimensioning which should be done with computer-aided methods for gaining optimized designs This paper deals with the possibilities of geothermal exploration and design of borehole heat exchanger systems On two example projects, it is furthermore shown, which potentials for optimization and which limitations occur to the particular exploration methods
