The Department of Environment and Natural Resources also administers the South Dakota Oil and Gas Initiative, which provides mapping and database tools to assist with the exploration and development of South Dakota's Oil and Gas Resources: http://www.sdgs.usd.edu/sdoil/


Summary

The Minerals and Mining Program oversees the regulation of oil and gas exploration, recovery, and reclamation activities in South Dakota. Permits are required for drilling of oil or gas wells, and the SD Codified Laws contain provisions pertaining to well testing, classification, metering, operation, and spacing. Additional regulations are contained in the SD Administrative Rules section 74:12.
