Project Description When completed, 1010 Avenue of the Arts has the potential to make an impact on hundreds of families in the adjacent neighborhoods of South Philadelphia who need a new elementary school for their children as the result of local parochial school closures. Surveys of project partners also estimate that 1010 Avenue of the Art has the potential to create up to 86 new jobs for the region. Upon completion, the project will serve as the dynamic heart of the southern section of the Avenue of the Arts and a catalyst for new development. The building’s column free volume and high Victorian engineered structure present an excellent opportunity for renovation into an architecturally dramatic, sustainable education and performing arts facility that links Philadelphia’s history and future.

Targets / Milestones By implementing its proposed GCHP system at a historically certified location in the heart of Philadelphia’s arts and tourism district, 1001 SOUTH 15TH STREET ASSOCIATES will demonstrate the following technological and business innovations: 1) The rehabilitation of a historically significant train shed into a new educational and performing arts facility housing an award winning K-8 Performing Arts Charter School, 2) Private ownership structure that combines historic tax credits, state solar energy credits and New Markets Tax Credits to reduce the overall cost of development and construction without exceeding the fiscal limits of a charter school budget, 3) A Ground Coupled Heat Pump System with an estimated 206 ton cooling capacity, utilizing a piping network in boreholes drilled in a 16,500 square feet area in the 23,000 square feet historic train depot, 4) The use of a dry cooler, i.e. a hybrid system, to improve the efficiency and life cycle effectiveness of the GCHP system by seasonally rebalancing the ground temperature, 5) The design and installation of a user-interfaced building management system that will incorporate monitoring the building’s energy use into the K-8 school’s curriculum, 6) Creation of a highly visible public forum for demonstrating the benefits of geothermal energy by using interactive building management system software and display monitors that explain the GCHP system, 7) Use of an energy saving LED ‘marquee’ sign placed in the Avenue of the Arts park to publicly display real time energy and cost savings achieved by the GCHP system, 8) Use of educational signage throughout the Avenue of the Arts Park that details how the GCHP system works and its long term benefits, and 9) Integration of the energy, costs and environmental impact of the GCHP into the Science, Technology, Environmental and Math courses in the school curriculum.
