The Montana Natural Areas Act of 1974 provides for the designation and establishment of a system of natural areas in order to preserve the natural ecosystems of these areas. Designated natural areas are protected from development which may adversely affect the integrity of the area, unless the legislature specifically authorizes such development. Existing land uses at the time of designation may continue under appropriate leases or agreements, but will be subject to regulations established by the Board of Land Commissioners. State natural areas are managed by local managing entities.
