In this study we combine thermal maturation models, based on the level of maturation of the Fruitland Formation coals, and time-dependet temperature models, based on heat-flow data in the San Juan region, to further investigate both the thermal history of the region and the nature of the influence of the San Juan volcanic field thermal source on the thermal history of the San Juan Basin. First, we review heat-flow data, coal-maturation data, and the general geologic history of the San Juan region. Next, we discuss thermal models for the region based on the present observed heat flow. Then the thermal models are combined with burial history models for the Fruitland coals in the San Juan Basin in order to calculate model maturationvalues which are compared to observed maturation values. Finally, implications of the model results for the San Juan region are discussed.
