Summary

It is the policy of the state to encourage the development of mined resources in Maryland while protecting the environment and public health and safety. This legislation establishes the Bureau of Mines within the Department of the Environment and provides for the establishment of rules and regulations governing mining activity. The legislation addresses the permitting process for mining activities; the examination, licensing, inspection, and supervision of mining activity (sec. 15-301 et seq.); mine safety (sec. 15-401 et seq.); strip mining (sec. 15-501 et seq.); deep mine control (sec. 15-601 et seq.); and surface mining (sec. 15-801 et seq.).
