Veolia UK has published the results of a YouGov survey backing its calls to limit the number of recycling bins used for household waste and recycling collections. The company (Paris Euronext: VIE and NYSE: VE) said that a pragmatic approach should be taken to waste collection when new EU regulations are implemented in January 2015. According to the EU’s revised Waste Framework Directive, every waste collection authority must have separate collections for waste paper, metal, plastic and glass wherever this is ‘Technically, Environmentally and Economically Practicable’ (TEEP). This is in addition to food and gardening or ‘organic’ waste and non-recyclable or ‘black bag’ waste.

A scientist at the University of Alberta, Canada is research to determine whether it’s effective to use pipelines to transport agricultural waste used in biofuels. Standards in the UK’s vehicle recycling industry are improving but the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) can still do more to ensure that end of life vehicles (ELVs) do not escape official recycling statistics, according to vehicle recycling firm, Remove My Car. The company cited the recent Scottish Cash Ban and revised European ELV recycling targets as significant improvements in the industry but argued that the DVLA should do more to clear confusion surrounding Certificates of Destruction (CODs) and V5C vehicle logbooks.

The U.S. could power 14 million homes and heat a further 10 million if it moved from landfill to waste to energy, according to a new study published by the American Chemistry Council (ACC). Conducted by the Earth Engineering Center (EEC) of Columbia University, the study found that if all of the Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) that is currently disposed in landfills each year in the U.S. were diverted to waste to energy facilities, it could generate enough electricity to meet nearly 12% of the U.S. total demand.

The latest figures on carton recycling in the EU have shown that 42% of beverage cartons were recycled in 2013, equivalent to approximately 425,000 tonnes of cartons and a a rise of 3% on the 2012 figures. The increase follows the year on year increase of 3% recorded from 2011-12 and brings the total recovery rate (comprising recycling and energy recovery) has now reached 71% across the EU.

California’s goal of achieving a 75% recycling rate by 2020 could create over 110,000 jobs, according to a new report by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). Back in 2011, Governor Jerry Brown signed Assembly Bill 341, which mandates that “75 percent of solid waste generated be source reduced, recycled, or composted by the year 2020.”

A report aimed at cutting waste from single use plastic bags has been approved by Members of the European Parliament's Environment Committee. The main objective of the amended directive on packaging and waste is to limit the negative impacts on the environment, in particular in terms of litter, to encourage waste prevention and to reduce significantly the number of single-use ‘lightweight’ plastic bags which is defined as 50 microns or less in thickness.

Studies conducted by the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs in collaboration with the Saudi Arabian Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) recommend that the ministry establish a joint stock company for the treatment and recycling of solid waste in the Kingdom using the latest technology to dispose of the massive quantity of waste generated in the country in an environmentally friendly manner.
