Update on the Activities Inventory:
Key Trends in LEDS Programs Globally

LEDS GP operates an inventory of LEDS support activities in cooperation with international partners. Wiki functionality allows partners to update the inventory with information on current activities.

In addition to numerous new activities reported to the website, one important change has been made to the inventory itself—merging the former country-specific listings into common, program-specific activities. This allows for clearer information presentation and a more efficient summation of activities’ target areas.

Assessment Summary and Key Findings

The partnership recently conducted an assessment assessment of LEDS support activities internationally drawing from data provided by its network of government and ministerial partners, international development agencies, and technical organizations. Continuing the last year’s trend, there has been a significant rise in the volume of LEDS activities. A total of 77 organizations/agencies are partnering on LEDS activities with 116 countries. Some of the key assessment findings include:

  • Regional support is strongest in East, South, and Southeast Asia (119 combined activities), South America (35), and Central America (28). Notable among the changes is additional support in Western and Eastern Africa, although Central African and Middle Eastern support is still very limited.
  • China is shown as having the most activity with a total of 27 low emission planning programs, followed closely by Indonesia, Mexico, Vietnam, and Thailand with 24, 23, 21, and 19 programs, respectively. Many other countries show at least 10 programs: Kenya (17), South Africa (17), Brazil (16), India (15), Philippines (14), Colombia (13), Peru (13), Costa Rica (12), Chile (11), Ethiopia (11), and Cambodia, Ghana, Malaysia, and Morocco with 10 each.

  • Capacity building has become a dominant focus area across the activities with high interest in the development or strengthened implementation of climate change policies, preparation of greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories, enhancing capacities for nationally appropriate mitigation actions (NAMAs) and LEDS, opening multi-sectoral dialogue to identify common concerns, and enhancing finances opportunities for LEDS implementation.
  • Sectoral coverage is dominated by Energy (68) sector-based activities. Land use is covered in 35 activities.
  • The major topics covered in these LEDS activities are policies/deployment programs (36), pathways analysis and implementation (29 each), finance (28), GHG inventory (27), and market analysis (26).

Next Steps

The LEDS Global Partnership will continue to collect information and report on global LEDS activities, and future efforts will concentrate on programs with a climate resilience focus. Please help improve the inventory by providing updated detailed sector and topic data. An activity assessment overview will be presented at the LEDS Global Partnership second annual workshop.
