Exploration Activity: Ground Gravity Survey At Kilauea East Rift Geothermal Area (Leslie, Et Al., 2004)

Exploration Activity Details
Location Kilauea East Rift Geothermal Area
Exploration Technique Ground Gravity Survey
Activity Date 1998 - 1998

Usefulness useful
DOE-funding Unknown

Exploration Basis
The purpose of this study was to learn about the structure of the submarine portion of Kilauea. This includes the marine portion of the East Rift Zone known as Puna Ridge

Notes
A marine survey over the Puna Ridge aboard the research vessel Maurice Ewing conducted several geophysical studies to learn about the structure of the seaward extension of the ERZ. Gravity measurements of Puna Ridge show a high density anomaly at depth which corresponds to high velocity data obtained from seismic surveys done as part of the same study. The anomaly is interpreted as a complex system of intrusive dikes, similar to what is inferred in the subsurface of the terrestrial section of the ERZ.
