Abstract
The amount of the hydric reserve and the physical and chemical characteristics of the Guarani Aquifer System (GAS) turn it in an almost unique groundwater hydric resource worldwide. It has a hydric potential of the order of 40.000 km3 and it presents, to a large extent of the area that occupies (1,18 1,000 km2), low enthalpy thermalism conditions and important volumes of flow (from 30 to 340 m3/h). These attributes make the GAS an strategic resource, and give it a great social-economic importance. Thus, it is necessary to develop a Regional Managment Plan, which comprises the four countries that share the GAS (Argentina, Brasil, Paraguay and Uruguay), assuring its conservation and aiming to a sustainable use of the GAS.
