The Geothermal Resource Portfolio Optimization and Reporting Technique (GeoRePORT) System is a resource and project assessment tool used to measure potential and guide development in the geothermal sector.

The methodology assesses three categories of geothermal project development: geological, technical, and socio-economic. The GeoRePORT System provides a process for objectively appraising project progress and resource grade in in individual geothermal areas.

What the Protocol Is:

  • A method for assessing individual projects;
  • A set of assessment tools (the GeoRePORT Protocol, Young et al., 2015b) applicable to all stages of geothermal development; and
  • A Protocol for evidence-based, objective assessment of a project's progress and grade.

What the Protocol is Not:

  • A standard, or a pass/fail mark—it only provides the means to identify characteristics of geothermal resources and associated projects;
  • A reporting requirement for anything beyond the needs of GTO—namely for baseline assessment, goal setting, application evaluation, project close-out summaries, and portfolio reporting;
  • A process or plan for geothermal exploration or development at any location;
  • A replacement for geothermal expertise in assessing project potential; or
  • A set of national or local regulatory reporting requirements.


The Geothermal Resource Portfolio Optimization and Reporting Technique (GeoRePORT) System is based on the concept that a geothermal system can be described both in terms of

  1. Grade - the quality of the geothermal resource as it relates to the potential to extract and produce heat, and
  2. Project Readiness Level - the progress of research and development over the lifetime of the project.

By identifying the grade of the major characteristics of the geothermal resource, users develop a better understanding of geologic attributes comparable across play types and areas. The grade of the resource in each location can be refined as new and better information is collected. The GeoRePORT System expands upon the concept of grade by considering not only the physical attribute (Character Grade), but also how the attribute is measured (Activity Index) and what is known about the quality of the data (Execution Index).

By identifying the readiness level of development in a given location, users can track the development progress of the project, from initial site scoping to the drilling of the well field.

For Individual Projects
  • Identifying resource grade and individual project progress are fundamental pieces to understanding the success of emerging technologies.
  • Having a comparable basis for choosing projects by specific characteristics, currently lacking today, is critical to conveying the impacts of DOE research or funding.

For Project Portfolios
  • Identifying overall portfolio success is key to justifying ongoing research and development funding.
  • Better displays of project progress is critical to conveying the impacts of DOE efforts.
  • Differentiating capacity estimates by resource grade allows for a targeted segmentation of projects funded, as well as projects which may fit the goals of DOE for future research funding.
  • Differentiating capacity estimates by resource knowledge allows for targeted tracking of the timelines required for scientific research - even comparisons between projects using the same techniques and similar resource grades.
