Forest policy and guidelines in Washington D.C. are focused on urban forestry, and are managed by the District Department of Transportation's Urban Forestry Administration. In 2010 The District completed its Assessment of Urban Forest Resources and Strategy.
The Assessment includes discussion of the urban forest canopy's benefit of reduced energy consumption with respect to shade and insulation, as well as its mitigating effects to the impacts of climate change.
