Flow Test:
Flow tests are typically conducted shortly after a well has been drilled to test its productivity. The well is opened and fluids are released, the volume of fluids discharged over a period of time is the flow rate of that well. This test reveals a wells capacity for power output, the chemistry of the fluids, temperature of the fluids, and pressure or temperature variations during production.

Introduction
Flow tests are an important process in identifying critical reservoir properties. This is a common method for groundwater, petroleum, and geothermal reservoir characterization (O’Sullivan, 1981). Flow tests used for geothermal exploration are commonly conducted to estimate the flow rate and capacity of a geothermal reservoir.
 
Use in Geothermal Exploration
Flow tests are conducted after drilling has been done and a hydrothermal reservoir has been located. These tests are open hole and can last for long periods of time to test how long a reservoir can produce at a given rate without any perturbations in flow or significant drop in pressure. Test results are typically plotted on a graph with pressure, temperature, power output, or chemical species concentration on the Y-axis and logarithm of time on the X-axis (Brown, et al., 2012). This test can be used to estimate the production capacity of a geothermal reservoir, how much fluid must be injected to sustain a reliable flow rate, the dimensions of a reservoir, connectivity with other wells in the field, if scaling is going to be an issue, etc. These are critical factors prior to designing a geothermal power or heat utilization facility.



 
Environmental Mitigation Measures
There are a number of strategies for decreasing the noise that is caused from flowing a steam well, mufflers are a common method for this (Zein, et al., 2010). Depending on the chemistry of the fluid being produced from the well there may be varying stages of mitigation. If the fluid is benign to the environment and is a dry steam then it is typically released to the atmosphere. If there are high concentrations of hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, ammonia, mercury, radon, or boron then some sort of scrubber or containment system should be used. However, most of the contaminants are in the liquid and are often re-injected. When the fluid produced is a water/vapor mixture it goes through a separator and the steam can be dealt with separately from the liquid.


 
Data Access and Acquisition
Flow test data is acquired at the well head by various tools in the field that measure flow rate, temperature, fluid composition, etc. This information is recorded and can be monitored at the well site or remotely.
