Silica deposition is the white buildup on the rocks. Silica deposition often causes scaling in geothermal pipelines and clogs up pore space in formations causing problems with reinjection, or in the case of the Blue Lagoon in Iceland, silica deposition prevented water from seeping into the ground causing the formation of beautiful pools on the surface. Photo taken by Darren Atkins at the Blue Lagoon, Iceland.
