Exploration Activity: Field Mapping At Kilauea East Rift Geothermal Area (Thomas, 1986)

Exploration Activity Details
Location Kilauea East Rift Geothermal Area
Exploration Technique Field Mapping
Activity Date 1978 - 1986

Usefulness useful
DOE-funding Unknown

Exploration Basis
This study was conducted as part of the Geothermal Resources Assessment Program initiated in 1979

Notes
Geologic mapping was done along the East Rift Zone; detailed historic lava flows were mapped as well as developed structural models of the rift. Locations and progressions of recorded eruptive cycles and fissures and faulting on the eastern flank of the Kilauea shield were also mapped. The model developed shows a rift zone composed of a series of parallel to subparallel, steeply dipping dikes which have migrated southward as the rift system has formed.
