New models for next generation wind turbines
In the last 20 years wind power capacity has been growing rapidly. Within a couple of years turbines became more efficient while costs relatively decreased. The ever-increasing size of the rotors is an important cause for the cost reduction. However, it becomes increasingly difficult to design such large turbines accurately and reliably because the aerodynamic models were developed for and validated on smaller turbines.

New R&D project VaStBlade: lower cost of energy due to more accurate design of large turbine blades

ECN and MONITOR JIP begin development of structural health monitoring system for offshore wind farms
Many offshore wind stakeholders acknowledge the relevance of monitoring offshore wind support structures. However, a dedicated standard for the design and installation of a monitoring system is still lacking. So is an effective tool to interpret and assess the collected data. A consortium of industry experts including ECN, by the name of MONITOR JIP, is now working on a solution.

Innovative white layer improves efficiency of bifacial solar panels
Dutch energy research institute ECN has developed a new bifacial solar panel design with a white layer between and around the cells. These white bifacial solar panels show a 5% increase in energy yield with respect to bifacial panels with a glass back and show the same maximum power output as a monofacial module.

International ammonia measurement experiment in Dronten
New technology allows for more accurate measurements and results.

Teams of scientists from the Netherlands, France and Switzerland will be performing a week-long, large-scale and rarely performed experiment in Dronten to measure ammonia emissions from fertilisers. They hope that this will prove that new technologies will allow for better and more accurate measurements of concentrations of ammonia in the air.
