ECN contributes to the MiLeSlag project as a scientific partner
For every ton of produced steel several hundred kilogram of slag accrue inevitably. These slags can be re-used in road construction, which increases resource efficiency and contributes to the circular economy. However, the application of steel slags has been restricted in some countries because of the possible release of contaminants. In the Mineralogy and Leachability of Steel Slags (MiLeSlag) project, in which ECN has a significant role, research is done to study the effect these slags have...

ECN and MONITOR JIP begin development of structural health monitoring system for offshore wind farms
Many offshore wind stakeholders acknowledge the relevance of monitoring offshore wind support structures. However, a dedicated standard for the design and installation of a monitoring system is still lacking. So is an effective tool to interpret and assess the collected data. A consortium of industry experts including ECN, by the name of MONITOR JIP, is now working on a solution.

Innovative white layer improves efficiency of bifacial solar panels
Dutch energy research institute ECN has developed a new bifacial solar panel design with a white layer between and around the cells. These white bifacial solar panels show a 5% increase in energy yield with respect to bifacial panels with a glass back and show the same maximum power output as a monofacial module.

International ammonia measurement experiment in Dronten
New technology allows for more accurate measurements and results.

Teams of scientists from the Netherlands, France and Switzerland will be performing a week-long, large-scale and rarely performed experiment in Dronten to measure ammonia emissions from fertilisers. They hope that this will prove that new technologies will allow for better and more accurate measurements of concentrations of ammonia in the air.

NAMAs continue to play important role after Paris but financing for implementation lags behind
The latest Mitigation Momentum NAMA Status Report released by ECN and Ecofys six months after the signing of the Paris Agreement, shows that Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) remain an important vehicle to tackle climate change in the new climate landscape. However, funding for implementation still lags behind.Through the Mitigation Momentum project, ECN supports governments of developing countries to design and implement climate strategies. NAMAs are often the mechanism of...

Consortium led by ECN develops Scalable Shade Tolerant Module for solar PV systems
Penetration of solar PV systems in the built environment is progressing rapidly in the past years. The two key challenges that need to be addressed to further enhance solar PV systems are the size availability and power losses due to irradiance mismatches from close obstructions such as dormers, chimneys etc. that cast shadows on the PV systems. The Scalable Shade Tolerant Module (SSTM) project, led by ECN, wants to resolve these problems.
