The Energy Input-Output Calculator (IO Calculator) allows users to estimate the economic development impacts from investments in alternate electricity generating technologies.

About the Calculator

The Energy Input-Output Calculator (IO Calculator) allows users to estimate the economic development impacts from investments in alternate electricity generating technologies. IO Calculator has default information about generating technologies and economic relationships between industries that can be utilized to perform an analysis based on generalized data. Model users are encouraged to override default data to create a more interesting analysis corresponding to the user's specifications.

IO Calculator was developed by the Department of Energy in consultation with the Department of Commerce, Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA); and relies on data (input-output tables) developed and published by the Bureau.

The BEA produces economic accounts statistics that enable government and business decision-makers, researchers, and the American public to follow and understand the performance of the Nation's economy. To do this, BEA collects source data, conducts research and analysis, develops and implements estimation methodologies, and disseminates statistics to the public.

IO Calculator also uses data files developed and published by the Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics.

EERE

The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) invests in clean energy technologies that strengthen the economy, protect the environment, and reduce dependence on foreign oil. By partnering with industry, state and local governments, universities, and manufacturers, EERE plays a critical role in improving energy efficiency practices and increasing their adoption by American consumers, industry, and governments.

What is IO Calculator?

Structural changes in the profile of electricity supply can have wide-ranging and significant effects on employment, energy use patterns, the structure, composition, and overall economic performance of key industry sectors. The Energy Input-Output Calculator is a tool designed to estimate national-level economic effects - jobs and economic output - resulting from investments in electricity generation technologies using an intuitive, user-friendly interface.

On this site, you can create a user-account, run analyses, learn more about how IO Calculator works, understand the output, and get answers to questions about using the model.
