The EPA Simplified GHG Emissions Calculator (SGEC) is designed to develop an annual GHG inventory based on the EPA Climate Leaders Greenhouse Gas Inventory Protocol.

Overview

The EPA Simplified GHG Emissions Calculator (SGEC) is designed to develop an annual GHG inventory based on the EPA Climate Leaders Greenhouse Gas Inventory Protocol. This tool can be used to develop a baseline GHG inventory at any level of a community (i.e., facility, campus, city) and to track emissions annually thereafter. The calculator includes emissions from scope 1 (stationary combustion, mobile combustion, refrigerants, fire suppression equipment, and waste), scope 2 (purchased electricity and steam), and scope 3 (employee business travel and commuting, and product transport) sources.

Inputs and Outputs

Inputs include: Information about emissions sources (e.g., transportation mode, molar fraction of waste stream gas combusted, boiler effiency, eGRID subgregion); and type and quantity of fuel consumed in emissions sources during the reporting year.

Outputs include: CO2 equivalent emissions in metric tons for “direct” scope 1 (stationary combustion, mobile combustion, refrigeration and air conditioning equipment, fire suppression equipment, and gas waste streams); “indirect” scope 2 (purchased electricity and steam); and “optional” scope 3 (business travel, employee commuting, and product transport) sources, with a summation of total emissions.

Highlights

EPA's SGEC is provides a simple GHG calculator for basic inventory development. The Climate Leaders Program offers detailed technical guidance to explain the inventory process and calculation methodologies used in the calculator.
