Drilling Techniques:
There are a variety of drilling techniques which can be used to sink a borehole into the ground. Each has its advantages and disadvantages, in terms of the depth to which it can drill, the type of sample returned, the costs involved and penetration rates achieved. There are two basic types of drills: drills which produce rock chips, and drills which produce core samples.

Introduction
Drilling techniques are normally the final stages of exploration because drilling is the most expensive form of exploration. Drilling cost vary widely depending on the size and depth of the hole being drilled. Other factors that affect drilling costs and methods are types of formations being drilled through, well casings being used, equipment available, reservoir temperature, and pressure. Drilling of large diameter, deep production wells can be very complicating and often unexpected events occur which slow drilling down and can drastically raise costs.
 
Use in Geothermal Exploration
Drilling techniques are essential for commercial geothermal electricity production as we know it today. Drilling is required to retrieve fluids from the reservoir that are hot enough and under enough pressure to spin a turbine and generator. Drilling techniques are a very important exploration techniques as well as an essential step toward utilization.

 
Field Procedures
Drilling normally begins with small diameter shallow wells such as Thermal Gradient Holes, Slim Holes, or Core Holes. Once data are gathered from the more inexpensive drilling methods a better reservoir model can be made and then locations for further drilling can be narrowed down. Once a confident reservoir model is made Development Drilling methods can be employed.

Potential Pitfalls
-Drilling is expensive and time consuming, unsuccessful drilling may lead to failure of a project.

-Drilling can be dangerous.

-Most drilling methods need a drilling pad which requires a small amount of land to be cleared for the drilling rig and all associated equipment. In many locations access roads need to be constructed so all the drilling equipment can be transported to the drilling location.
