Introduction
Once exploration has provided a reservoir model with enough information to choose drilling locations developmental drilling can start. Developmental drilling is the first step in development but can also be considered the last step in exploration, because a development well is still useful for gathering reservoir information and refining the reservoir model.
 
Use in Geothermal Exploration
Developmental drilling is essential for commercial geothermal electricity production as we know it today. Developmental drilling is required to retrieve fluids from within the reservoir that are hot enough and under enough pressure to spin a turbine and generator. Developmental drilling includes Observation Wells, Production Wells, and Well Deepening.

Best Practices
Developmental drilling should only begin once a dependable reservoir model has been established and there is a good amount of certainty that the reservoir will be productive.
 
Potential Pitfalls
-Development drilling is expensive and time consuming, unsuccessful drilling efforts may lead to failure of a project.

-Development drilling can be dangerous.

-Development drilling requires a drilling pad which needs a small amount of land to be cleared for the drilling rig and all associated equipment. In many locations access roads need to be constructed so all the drilling equipment can be transported to the drilling location.
