Fault Current Limiter
A fault current limiter prevents current in an electrical circuit from exceeding a predetermined level by increasing the electrical impedance of that circuit before the current through the circuit exceeds that level. Fault current limiters are designed so as to minimize the impedance of the circuit under normal conditions to reduce losses, but increase the impedance of the circuit under fault conditions to limit fault current.[1]
Wikipedia Definition
- A Fault Current Limiter (FCL) is a device which limits the prospective fault current when a fault occurs (e.g. in a power transmission network). The term includes superconducting devices and non-superconducting devices, however some of the more simple non-superconducting devices (such as simple inductors or variable resistors) are typically termed Fault Current Controllers (For example, the ground fault circuit interrupter is commonly used in residential installations).
