Cuttings Analysis:
Cuttings are small bits of a rock formation derived from a borehole, the rock chips are carried to the surface by the drilling fluid. As the hole is drilled, cuttings are collected and analyzed to identify lithology and fluids encountered at depth.

Introduction
Cuttings are most typically collected and analyzed by a mudlogger, who after analysis creates a mud log. A mud log is the graphical summation of information collected from a mudlogger, which typically includes lithology, porosity, and fluid content.
 
Use in Geothermal Exploration
Cuttings can be used for geothermal exploration similarly to how they are used for oil and gas exploration. Ultimately the mudlogger on a geothermal well is looking for hydrothermal minerals that would be indicative of a hydrothermal system at depth. Cuttings provide direct rock samples from the formations that are being drilled through. To learn more about the formation, the cuttings are analyzed and characterized to identify the most probable and producible formation.



 
Data Access and Acquisition
Cuttings are obtained from the well, brought to the surface by drilling fluids (mud), and separated from the mud using a shaker. Preliminary analysis of the cuttings is done under a low magnification microscope, and if more information is necessary then other techniques can be used. If more detailed information is desired a higher power microscope may be used, thin sections may be made, or an XRD analysis may be done with the particular cuttings of interest.
