The City of Naperville Utility will receive $10.9 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Energy to develop a smart-grid energy management system. The D.O.E. selected 100 companies nationwide to receive funding as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.[2]

The smart-grid energy management system will deploy more than 57,000 smart meters and install the infrastructure and software necessary to support and integrate various smart grid functions and the two-way flow of information between the utility and customers.[1]
