Abstract
Fieldwork at Chena Hot Springs was conducted by the authors during the summerof 2005, subsequent laboratory studies and data reduction were completed during the2005-2006 academic year at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The objectives of thisstudy were to 1) Constrain CHS geology by surface characterization of rocks from theimmediate hot springs area. This included pluton mapping, limited mapping of localfaults and fracture orientations, and petrology, mineralogy, geochemistry, of surface rocksamples. 2) Describe borehole geology by creating lithologic logs for each of the 10 CHSgeothermal wells drilled for the GRED III project, as well as a small subset of previouslyexisting wells and new wells drilled for a separately funded project to Chena Hot SpringsResort (10 T.G. wells + 6 other wells = 16 total). 3) Characterize geothermal fluid-rockinteractions by hydrothermal alteration studies, fluid inclusion studies, and limited waterchemistry data interpretation. 4) Develop a hypothesis for the ultimate heat source ofCHS.
