Report: Assessment of Moderate- and High-Temperature Geothermal Resources of the United States

Abstract
Scientists with the U.S.Geological Survey (USGS)recently completed anassessment of our Nationsgeothermal resources.Geothermal power plantsare currently operating in sixstates: Alaska, California,Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, and Utah. The assessmentindicates that the electricpower generation potentialfrom identified geothermalsystems is 9,057 Megawattselectric(MWe), distributedover 13 states. The meanestimated power productionpotential from undiscoveredgeothermal resources is30,033 MWe. Additionally, another estimated 517,800MWe could be generatedthrough implementationof technology for creatinggeothermal reservoirs inregions characterized byhigh temperature, but lowpermeability, rock formations.
