Journal Article: A Review of High-Temperature Geothermal Developments in the Northern Basin and Range Province

Abstract
Intensive geothermal exploration i n the northernBasin.and Range province has r e s u l t e d i n thethe discovery of nine high-temperature (>ZOO"C)geothermal r e s e r v o i r s_:Roosevelt Hot Springs, UtahBeowawe, NevadaHumboldt House NevadaBrady s Hot Springs , NevadaDesert Peak, NevadaNorthern Dixie Valley, NevadaSoda Lake, NevadaSteamboat Springs, NevadaCOSO, C a l i f o r n i aIn a d d i t i o n , there is geological, geophysical,and geochemical evidence t o i n d i c a t e an undiscoveredr e s e r v o i r i n the Long Valley c a l d e r a , Calif o r n i a . Delays i n Federal l e a s i n g are the mainreason t h i s r e s e r v o i r has not yet been located.Four of these areas occur along the east or westmargins of the province and are s p a t i a l l y associatedwith Quaternary or Recent s i l i c e o u s volcanic c e n t e r s .Five are i n or near t h e Carson Basin i n northwesternNevada and lack evidence f o r magmatic heating. TheBeowawe r e s e r v o i r has a unique occurrence near theeast-west center of the province. Most r e s e r v o i r sare c l o s e l y a s s o c i a t e d with known or suspected Basinand Range normal f a u l t s .With t h e exceptions of the l o c a l i z e d shallowsteam production at Cos0 and bicarbonate-rich waterat Reowawe, the known r e s e r v o i r waters have a d i l u t esodium chloride composition. Reservoir temperaturest y p i c a l l y range from 200 t o 220°C. The maximum reportedtemperature i n the northern Basin and Rangeprovince is 271OC a t Roosevelt Hot Springs.The most thoroughly evaluated r e s e r v o i r s areRoosevelt Hot Springs and northern Dixie Valley with13 and 10 deep wells r e s p e c t i v e l y . The most limiteddata are from the Soda Lake, Steamboat Springs, HumboldtHouse, and Long Valley prospects where onlytwo or three deep w e l l s .per prospect have been d r i l l -ed. Depths of the producing i n t e r v a l s vary from about300 t o 3000 m, but production is often from less than1200 m.Only one high-temperature7 geothermal power planta t Roosevelt Hot Springs is under c o n s t r u c t i o n i n theChevron Resources Companyprovince. Extensive n e g o t i a t i o n s between developersand u t i l i t i e s have taken place regarding t h e Beowawe,Dixie Valley, and Desert Peak r e s e r v o i r s ,
