AIT-UNEP Regional Resource Centre for Asia and the Pacific
AIT-UNEP Regional Resource Centre for Asia and the Pacific is an organization based in Pathumthani, Thailand.
"Responding the growing demands for capacity building to support the environment community at large, the Executive Director of United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) together with the President of the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) had established the AIT-UNEP Regional Resource Center for Asia and the Pacific (RRC.AP) in 1989.
RRC.AP aims to be the key resource of technical support with capacity building and informed decision making for UNEP's MTS priorities and implementation program in Asia and the Pacific, with the Bali Strategic Plan (BSP) mandate for Technology Support and Capacity Building. The specific objective of RRC.AP is to assist UNEP and the Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific with the delivery of UNEP's Medium Term Strategy (MTS 2010-13) as well as AIT and its Strategy 2010-2013.
RRC.AP, as a partnership center between UNEP and AIT, serves as a Secretariat of the Joint Steering Committee (JSC) to oversee the implementation of the partnership.
- In 1989, UNEP's Division of Early Warning and Assessment (DEWA) and AIT established the Global Resource Information Database – Bangkok (GRID‐Bangkok) to develop and disseminate environmental and statistical datasets focusing on Thailand.
- In 1993, GRID‐Bangkok was upgraded to an out‐posted office for UNEP Division of Assessment, and focused on capacity building of the national governments in the Asia‐Pacific to prepare quantitative assessments and the state of the environment (SoE) reports.
- In 1999, UNEP Executive Director upgraded the office to be the Regional Resource Centre for Asia and the Pacific (RRC.AP) responding to the growing demands for capacity building to support the environment community at large.
- Since 2000 RRC.AP has been providing technical support for the implementation of the UNEP Regional Strategy in general and in particular the implementation of the Bali Strategic Plan (BSP) mandate for Technology Support and Capacity Building."
