Electricity Generation

Total annual electricity generation by country, 1980 to 2009 (available in billion kilowatthours ). Compiled by Energy Information Administration (EIA).

These two datasets include energy statistics for the European Union (EU). The statistics are available from the European Commission. The data includes detailed information about: production, net imports, gross inland consumption, and electricity generation for the EU as a whole, as well as the individual member countries, for the period between 1990 and 2007.

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) publishes a wide selection of data and statistics on energy power technologies from a variety of sources (e.g. EIA, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratory, EPRI and AWEA). In 2006, NREL published the 4th edition, presenting, among other things, electricity generation. The New Zealand Ministry of Economic Development publishes an annual Energy Outlook, which presents projections of New Zealand's future energy supply, demand, prices and greenhouse gas emissions. The principle aim of these projections is to inform the national energy debate. Included here are the model results for electricity and generation capacity. The spreadsheet provides an interactive tool for selecting which model results to view, and which scenarios to evaluate; full model results for each scenario are also included.

The New Zealand Ministry of Economic Development publishes energy data including many datasets related to electricity. Included here are four electricity generation datasets: quarterly net electricity by fuel type from 1974 to 2010 (in both GWh and PJ); annual net electricity generation by fuel type- cogeneration separated (1975 - 2009); and estimated generation by fuel type for North Island, South Island and New Zealand (2009). The fuel types include: hydro, geothermal, biogas, wind, oil, coal, and gas.

UK National Statistics on electricity generation through sales are presented in Chapter 5 (Electricity) of the Digest of UK Energy Statistics (DUKES). Included here are the datasets for commodity balances (2007 - 2009), and statistics on generation capacity, fuels used for generation, as well as load factors adn efficiencies (2005 - 2009). The Form EIA-411, “Coordinated Bulk Power Supply
Program Report,” collects information from the Nation’s power system
planners about the electricity supply, both capacity and energy, that is
needed to serve current demand and for future growth.

EIA previously collected sales and revenue data in a
category called "Other." This category was defined as including
activities such as public street highway lighting, other sales to public
authorities, sales to railroads and railways, and interdepartmental
sales. EIA has revised its survey to separate the transportation sales
and reassign the other activities to the commercial and industrial
sectors as appropriate.

The EIA-906, EIA-920, EIA-923 and predecessor forms
provide monthly and annual data on generation and fuel consumption at
the power plant and prime mover level. A subset of plants,
steam-electric plants 10 MW and above, also provides boiler level and
generator level data. Data for utility plants are available from 1970,
and for non-utility plants from 1999. Beginning with January 2004 data
collection, the EIA-920 was used to collect data from the combined heat
and power plant (cogeneration) segment of the non-utility sector; also

The Form EIA-860 is a generator-level
survey that collects specific information about existing and planned
generators and associated environmental equipment at electric power
plants with 1 megawatt or greater of combined nameplate capacity. The
survey data is summarized in reports such as the Electric Power Annual. The survey data is also available for download here.
