U.S. Electric Utility Companies and Rates: Look-up by Zipcode (Feb 2011)

Dataset Summary

Description

This dataset, compiled by NREL and Ventyx, provides average residential, commercial and industrial electricity rates by zip code for both investor owned utilities (IOU) and non-investor owned utilities. Note: the file includes average rates for each utility, but not the detailed rate structure data found in the database available via the zip-code look-up feature on the OpenEI Utilities page (http://en.openei.org/wiki/Gateway:Utilities). The data was released by NREL/Ventyx in February 2011.

Does anyone know if this file includes supply rates only, or supply + transmission + distribution? Thanks!

Units? by Adabhael, October 30, 2012

Unless I am missing something, these data do not appear to state the units.  This page describes them as "Average utility rates by zip code." But I cannot seem to find a more specific declaration, which  which makes the set pretty hard to use.  I suspect these $/MWh? Are they Current 2012 dollars, or 2011 dollars or what?

Hi Adabhael,Sorry about the confusion. The data is in $/MWh and all prices are reflected in 2011 dollars.

This is pretty helpful, but if anyone knows of a dataset with more complete data (per Ewilson's comment below) and/or detailed shapefiles with electric utility service area/territories detailed beyond zip down to the address for lookup/GIS/mapping, please tweet me @SethEKaye and I'll send my email. Thanks!

Missing utilities by Ewilson, September 7, 2012

FYI, there are several utilities not included in these csv files. For example:

Ameren Illinois Company has utility ID #56697
NSTAR Electric Company has utility ID #54913

The highest EiaUtilityId in these csv files is 49998, so any utilities with larger ID#s will not be in them (and therefore cannot be found via zip code look-up).
